The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned presidential candidates and their supporters against campaigning in religious centers.

According to INEC, the official campaign for the 2023 presidential and national assembly elections will begin in September 2023, while the election will be held on February 25, 2022.

In the schedule that the commission put out, it was also stated that elections for governor and state houses of assembly would be held on March 11, 2023.

In an interview with Bellnewsonline, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Committee on Information and Voter Education, Mr. Festus Okoye, said it is against the 2022 Electoral Act to campaign in churches, mosques, and other religious centers.

Okoye also warned politicians against the use of force and violence in the election. He added that the Electoral Act prohibited the use of violence by candidates and their supporters.

The INEC Commissioner disclosed that offenders of the law may be jailed for violating the electoral act.
