According to a statement released by Migrant Rescue Watch, the police intercepted a vehicle driven by the Libyan suspect, identified by his initials A.M.M., who his mother accompanied.
The Abu Najim Police Department in Sirte, Libya, has arrested six Nigerian nationals alongside a Libyan driver and his mother for alleged involvement in human smuggling.
According to a statement released by Migrant Rescue Watch, the police intercepted a vehicle driven by the Libyan suspect, identified by his initials A.M.M., who his mother accompanied.
The six undocumented Nigerian migrants were found in the vehicle during the operation.
Authorities said all those apprehended have been referred to the competent legal authorities for prosecution.
“Abu Najim Police Dept. (Sirte) seized a vehicle and arrested a Libya driver (‘A.M.M.’) accompanied by his mother for attempted human smuggling of 6 undocumented #migrants of Nigerian nationality. All referred to competent authorities for legal action,” MRW said.
Libya remains a major transit hub for migrants, many of whom attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe despite the dangers and risks of detention.
