The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Yobe State Command, has declared a 30-year-old convicted inmate wanted after he escaped following a road accident involving a prison vehicle.
Bellnews reports that the incident occurred while inmates were being transported from Potiskum to Damaturu.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Abdullahi Adamu, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday in Damaturu.
According to the statement, the incident happened on April 13, 2026, when the vehicle conveying inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum to Damaturu was involved in a crash.
“The unfortunate incident occurred while efforts are being made to rescue the affected accident victims,” the statement read.
The command identified the escaped inmate as Dahiru Mohammed, aged 30. It added that the fugitive bears prison number J/1539/24 and was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024.
The Correctional Service warned members of the public against engaging with the escaped inmate.
“The escaped individual is considered dangerous, and members of the public are advised not to have any personal dealings with him,” the statement added.
The command appealed to residents to report any information that could lead to the fugitive’s re-arrest. It advised that such information be forwarded to the nearest police station or correctional facility.
Authorities also warned that harbouring a fugitive remains a serious criminal offence punishable under the law.
