A faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly took control of the Assembly complex, conducting a plenary session attended by over 20 members loyal to the embattled Speaker, Martin Amaewhule.

During the sitting, the lawmakers discussed the suspension of the strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) and the directive for the police to investigate the fire incident in the chamber on October 29.

The deliberations also touched on whether to reopen the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the previous cause of political tension in the state.

Police patrol vans were positioned at the entrance of the Assembly complex, and restrictions on vehicular and human movements were imposed during the session. However, these restrictions have been lifted at Moscow Road.

The move follows recent developments, including the factional Speaker, Edison Ehie, alleging an assassination attempt on his life on Sunday night, adding to the ongoing political turmoil in the state.
