Stanley Nwabali, a previously lesser-known figure in international football, rose to prominence during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Ivory Coast. Despite not being a fixture in the Super Eagles squad prior to the tournament, Nwabali emerged as Nigeria’s primary goalkeeper, edging out Francis Uzoho of Omonia.
His standout performances validated the decision of the Eagles’ former coach, Jose Peseiro, conceding only two goals up until the semi-final stage of the competition. Notably, Nwabali showcased his talent by keeping four clean sheets and saving two penalties against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the semi-final clash.
Although his heroics couldn’t prevent Ivory Coast from clinching the tournament title with a 2-1 victory in the final, Nwabali’s prowess did not go unnoticed.
Shortly after returning to Chippa United in South Africa post-tournament, Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on March 3rd that two clubs are actively pursuing Nwabali’s services. According to Romano, Saudi Pro League’s Al-Ettifaq and England’s Championship side Queen Parks Rangers have expressed keen interest in acquiring the Nigerian goalkeeper.
In his update, Romano stated, “Nigeria GK Stanley Nwabali is attracting interest from various clubs as Al Ettifaq in Saudi and Queens Park Rangers in the UK have made inquiries about him.” He further noted that Chippa United will deliberate on Nwabali’s future options in the coming months.
