Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Wednesday met with top foreign diplomats in Abuja in what appears to be part of early political consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, brought together the British High Commissioner to Nigeria and representatives from the European Union, Germany, Canada and France. It took place over breakfast in the Federal Capital Territory.Security advisory services
Obi confirmed the engagement in a post on X, where he briefly spoke about the nature of the discussion. According to him, “Today in Abuja, I had a breakfast meeting with some diplomats that included, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria and his Colleagues from the European Union, Germany, Canada, and France. It was an enriching discussion on relationships.”
Although the former Anambra State governor did not give full details of what was discussed, the meeting has drawn attention due to its timing. Political watchers say such interactions often signal early moves ahead of major elections.
There has been a steady increase in engagements between Nigerian political figures and members of the international community in recent months. These meetings are usually focused on governance, economic stability, and democratic development.
Obi, who was a key contender in the 2023 presidential election, has remained visible in national conversations. He continues to speak on issues relating to economic reforms, public accountability, and leadership.
While no official statement has been released by the foreign missions involved, such meetings are often seen as part of routine diplomatic engagement with influential political stakeholders.
