In Gaza, Mozambique, on October 17, 1945, Graca Machel was born. She is the widow of Nelson Mandela and Samora Machel, two former presidents of South Africa and Mozambique, respectively.

She is the only woman in contemporary history to have held the positions of First Lady of Mozambique and South Africa.

From 1975 through 1986, in Mozambique, Graca Machel was wed to Samora Machel, the country’s first president. Two children were born to Graca Machel and the former president of Mozambique. Josina, a daughter, was born in 1976, and Malengane, a son, was born in 1976. (born December 1978). In 1986, former president Samora passed away while still in office.

 

On July 18, 1998, in Johannesburg, this well-known woman and politician wed Nelson Mandela, the second head of South Africa’s government. Nelson Mandela turned 80 years old on this day. Nelson Mandela, a well-known African independence warrior, was South Africa’s president at the time.
