The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alleged that Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), used his position to award lucrative contracts worth millions to his wife and brother-in-law.

According to the anti-graft agency, Emefiele approved payments totaling N97.9 million to Architekon Nigeria Ltd, a company where both his wife and brother-in-law serve as directors. The contract was reportedly for the supply of office furniture to the CBN.

During the court proceedings, the EFCC investigator revealed that ten individuals were involved in the documentation process for awarding these contracts. However, he emphasized that ultimate responsibility rested with Emefiele, as he was the head of the CBN at the time.

When questioned by the defendant’s counsel, the witness clarified that their investigation focused on Emefiele’s relatives and associates rather than the governor himself.

Further revelations emerged regarding Emefiele’s wife, Margaret Omoyile, who serves as a director of Archtekon Nigeria Limited under her maiden name. The company allegedly received multiple contracts, including supplying over 45 Toyota Hilux vehicles, with a total value ranging from N854,700,000 to N99,900,000.

Additionally, the EFCC disclosed that another company, April 1616 Investment Limited, benefited from CBN patronage. One of its directors, Sahadatu Ramalan Yaro, was allegedly employed by the CBN shortly before the company’s incorporation. April 1616 Investment was reportedly awarded contracts for Toyota branded motors in 2018.

The trial judge adjourned the proceedings to April 25 for further hearings.
