A devastating earthquake in northwest China’s Gansu Province has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 111 lives, with over 200 individuals reported injured, according to state media reports on Tuesday morning local time.

The earthquake, which struck late Monday evening, prompted the swift deployment of rescue workers, including officials from local emergency management and fire departments, as revealed by Chinese state media outlet Xinhua. The United States Geological Survey initially reported a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in the region, predicting severe shaking with probable extensive economic damage and likely widespread impact. However, Chinese authorities provided a slightly higher reading, indicating a 6.2-magnitude earthquake.

The epicenter of the quake was approximately 23 miles west-northwest of Linxia Chengguanzhen, with a shallow depth just over 6 miles, as stated by the USGS. Lanzhou, the provincial capital, is located about 60 miles away from the epicenter. The disaster has prompted urgent and coordinated efforts from local authorities and emergency response teams to manage the aftermath and provide assistance to the affected communities.
