Salahu Muhammad, the zonal coordinator for Abuja, representing the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), revealed in a statement the unfortunate loss of numerous esteemed professors across various universities. These losses include individuals from institutions such as Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai; Federal University of Technology, Minna; Federal University, Lafia; and Nasarawa State University, Nasarawa.

Expressing deep concern, Muhammad highlighted the trend of Nigerian academics seeking better prospects abroad over the past decade. He emphasized the strain on those who remain, citing excessive workloads, inadequate pay, and deteriorating working conditions eroding their sense of patriotism.

Muhammad lamented the toll these challenges have taken, noting that many ASUU members have succumbed to the harsh working environment, facing psychological and emotional stress, along with related health issues. He specifically cited the loss of 46 members within the Abuja zone alone, underscoring the recent passing of Professor Johnson Oyero, a distinguished figure from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, due to lack of access to quality medical care.

These remarks echo against the backdrop of ongoing national turmoil sparked by President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidies and the continuous depreciation of the naira in the foreign exchange market. Amid widespread discontent, Nigerians have taken to the streets in protest, denouncing the economic policies that have exacerbated the country’s hardships.
