The community of Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State has disavowed Chinyere Chukwu, a woman arrested two weeks ago for attempting to sell two of her sons for N1.8 million.
Chukwu, a mother of 11 children, was apprehended alongside her 17-year-old daughter, Joy Chukwu, with whom she conspired to sell the children.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, who had received information about Chukwu’s intention to sell her children, posed as a buyer to apprehend her.
During interrogation, Chinyere Chukwu claimed to be from Ozubulu, stating that her husband had passed away after they had two children. She alleged that she subsequently bore children for other men and wanted to sell two to provide for the rest.
However, a delegation from Ozubulu, led by the community’s President General, Chief Chris Ononuju, and Lady Ndupu Clara, visited the Commissioner’s office to assert that Chukwu was not a member of their community. They clarified that while Chukwu resided in Ozubulu, she was neither a native nor married to anyone from the community.
According to Ononuju, investigations revealed that Chukwu’s claims were false. Her purported husband, whom she alleged had died, is alive and has not remarried since his wife’s passing six or seven years ago. Chukwu had lived in the community with her husband but left after marital disagreements, claiming falsely that her husband had died.
The delegation expressed embarrassment over the situation, emphasizing that Chukwu’s actions tarnished the community’s reputation. They sought to correct the misconceptions created by Chukwu’s false claims.
