Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has said that political parties can only be recognised as a true opposition if they win elections, not by forming sudden alliances or making loud claims.
Bellnews reports that he spoke on Friday during a visit to the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja, where he also pledged his loyalty to the party’s new National Working Committee.
Wike dismissed the idea that smaller parties can assume the role of opposition without electoral success, stating that performance at the polls remains the only way to prove strength and relevance in Nigeria’s political space.
During the visit, he said he came to show support for the new leadership and to assure them of his commitment as the party works to recover from internal issues. He admitted that the PDP had gone through a difficult period but added that the situation is improving, though more effort and sacrifice will be needed to rebuild the party.
The former Rivers State governor urged the leadership to focus on reconciliation, especially by reaching out to members who left the party. According to him, many of those who defected still have interest in returning, often driven by political opportunities such as party tickets.
Wike also warned against distractions, including ongoing court cases, expressing confidence that the party would overcome its legal challenges and move forward stronger if it remains united and focused.
He said: “You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election. Those who say they are leading the opposition have not contested any election successfully.
“My coming here is to reassure you of my support. I have come to pledge my loyalty to the National Working Committee.
“Yes, we have crisis, and we have almost come out of it. It will require hard work and sacrifice to move the party forward.”
