In anticipation of the festive season, MTN Nigeria is partnering with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to temporarily open the Amawbia sections of the partially completed Enugu-Onitsha Dual Carriageway in Anambra State. MTN is the financial supporter of the dual carriageway that connects Anambra and other South-East states.
Dr. Reginald Facah, the Coordinator of MTN Community Liaison Initiative, announced the decision during a press conference in Amawbia, near Awka, Anambra State. He emphasized that the road opening aims to ease traffic flow for South-East commuters during the Yuletide period.
Facah acknowledged the significant traffic influx along the Onitsha carriageway during the festive season, leading to congestion. The temporary opening of the road seeks to decongest traffic and facilitate smooth travel for road users.
Speaking on behalf of MTN, Emmanuel Okereke, Senior Manager Sales, expressed excitement about partnering with the Federal Government on a road infrastructure tax credit scheme to complete the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. He emphasized the importance of the expressway as a gateway not only connecting Enugu and Anambra states but also serving as a crucial route to the rest of the country and Africa.
Sector Commander of FRSC, Anambra State, Adeoye Irelewuyi, acknowledged the traffic challenges experienced on the road during festive periods. He expressed joy and relief at the temporary opening of the road section, anticipating a reduction in traffic congestion and road traffic crashes.
Irelewuyi appealed to road users to exercise patience and caution, emphasizing the potential easing of traffic at the Amawbia flyover and underpass. Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Patricia Igwebuike, commended MTN for its timely intervention and urged road users to exercise caution, especially during the Yuletide season.
