Anambra State witnessed two separate incidents of significant fire outbreaks on Tuesday, affecting Nnewi, renowned for its automobile industry, and Awka, the state capital.

The fires, occurring at different times throughout the day, were swiftly brought under control by the diligent efforts of the Anambra State Fire Service personnel.

Engr. Martin Agbili, Chief of the Anambra State Fire Service, provided details of the incidents. The fire in Nnewi engulfed the Timber Market, prompting an immediate response from firefighting teams upon receiving a distress call around 11:30 am. Agbili explained that the fire, believed to have originated from a heap of sawdust, posed a significant threat but was effectively contained. Despite the intensity of the blaze, no casualties were reported, and the Timber Market was preserved due to the timely intervention of the firefighters. The operation lasted until approximately 5:40 pm.

In Awka, a fire broke out behind the SINAI Gas Plant, raising concerns due to the proximity of the facility. The Fire Service swiftly mobilized upon receiving a distress call at about 9:22 pm. Agbili disclosed that the fire, sparked by a bush fire of unknown origin, caused alarm among residents. However, prompt action by the firefighters prevented any damage to the gas plant and ensured the safety of the surrounding area. The firefighting efforts concluded around 10:41 pm.

Agbili emphasized the importance of proactive measures, urging the community to clear bushes, especially during the dry season, to mitigate fire risks. He expressed gratitude to those who alerted authorities promptly, underscoring the critical role of timely reporting in emergency response.
