President Bola Tinubu has unveiled plans to bolster food security in Nigeria in the year 2024, as he addressed the nation in his New Year’s message on Monday.

Tinubu affirmed the government’s commitment to cultivating approximately 500,000 hectares of farmland to address the prevalent issue of hunger in the country. Amid concerns about soaring inflation rates, particularly in food items, Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians in the past year.

Recognizing the high food inflation rate of 31.52% in October 2023, compared to 23.72% in October 2022, and an overall headline inflation rate of about 28%, Tinubu outlined plans to ensure a steady supply of food while tackling issues of security and affordability. He emphasized the cultivation of crops such as maize, rice, wheat, millet, and other staples across the country.

“We launched the dry season farming with 120,000 hectares of land in Jigawa State last November under our National Wheat Development Programme,” the President noted, highlighting the initial steps taken in the implementation of the food security program.

In addition to addressing food security, Tinubu pledged to enhance the business environment in Nigeria, aiming to eliminate obstacles hindering profitable business operations. Expressing concern over the exit of multinational companies from Nigeria due to power challenges and foreign exchange rate unpredictability, he vowed to fight against impediments to business competitiveness and make Nigeria an attractive destination for local and foreign investments.

Furthermore, the government committed to implementing new national wages for hardworking employees, aiming to alleviate the hardships experienced by citizens. Tinubu concluded his address by reiterating his determination to overcome obstacles and ensure positive economic growth for the nation.
