In the much-anticipated clash between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Cameroon, coach Randy Waldrum’s squad embarked on a journey to Douala with high hopes of clinching a victory and bringing home three crucial points.

The Super Falcons had been on an impressive winning streak, notching three consecutive victories leading up to the match. They triumphed over Ethiopia with a resounding 4-0 win on October 31, 2023, followed by a dominant 5-0 victory against Cape Verde on November 30, 2023. Their momentum continued as they secured a 2-1 win against Cape Verde in the return leg of the Olympics qualifiers on December 5.

However, their visit to Douala proved to be a challenging affair. Despite a series of throw-ins during the game, Nigeria’s women’s team struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

The best chance of the first half fell to midfielder Toni Payne in the 27th minute, but she failed to convert the golden opportunity. On the other hand, Cameroon had their own opportunity to score, but goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie thwarted their attempts with a stellar save.

As the second half unfolded, the Lionesses intensified their efforts, fueled by the support of the home crowd. Despite both teams’ relentless attempts to break the deadlock, the match concluded in a goalless draw.

With the first leg ending without a victor, all eyes now turn to the return leg at the Abuja National Stadium scheduled for Monday, February 26, 2024, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.

The outcome of this decisive match will determine which women’s team will represent Africa in the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris this summer.
