In a thrilling quarter-final match on Friday, the Super Eagles secured a spot in the 2023 AFCON semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Angola, thanks to a lone strike by forward Ademola Lookman.

The game kicked off with Nigeria displaying early promise, as both Ademola Lookman and Ola Aina made attempts within the Angolan box. However, it was Angola that exerted immediate pressure, earning a corner in the second minute. Stand-in captain William Troost-Ekong deflected a cross from Deivi Gilberto, leading to a remarkable save by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Despite sustained pressure, the Angolans were unable to breach the Nigerian defense. The Super Eagles created several opportunities, with Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen, and Ademola Lookman featuring prominently. Lookman ultimately secured the winning goal in the 41st minute, making it his third goal of the tournament.

Nigeria continued to dominate possession, with Simon and Osimhen threatening the Angolan goal. However, the Eagles were denied a second goal when Osimhen’s header was ruled offside in the 75th minute after a VAR check.

The match concluded with a solid defensive performance from Nigeria, securing their place in the semifinals. The Super Eagles will face the winners of the quarter-final clash between South Africa and surprise package Cape Verde on February 7.
