The Anambra State government, under the leadership of Governor Soludo, has initiated a groundbreaking project to construct more than 1,200 open shops in the bustling Awka Capital Territory. This initiative serves as a proactive response to the recent demolition of informal shanty and roadside shops, a move that has sparked considerable public concern due to its adverse impact on local traders.

Ossy Onuko, the Managing Director of the Awka Capital Territory Development Agency (ACDA), revealed that construction of the open shops has already commenced along Club Road, popularly referred to as Abakaliki Street. Additionally, plans are underway to establish more shops at strategic junctions throughout the Capital City.

In addressing the concerns of affected traders, Onuko emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring order while acknowledging the economic challenges faced by the community. He highlighted the provision of modern amenities within the open shops, including facilities for washing fruits and vegetables to mitigate health risks associated with street vending.

Importantly, Onuko clarified that occupants of these shops will not be charged rent. Instead, a nominal fee will be levied for cleaning and maintenance purposes, marking a pioneering approach to governance in Anambra State.

The initiative aims not only to offer viable alternatives to displaced traders but also to enhance the overall urban landscape and promote public health and safety standards.
