In a significant development, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have formally withdrawn the impeachment notice previously served on Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The lawmakers convened a special session in Port Harcourt, focusing exclusively on the withdrawal of the impeachment notice during their deliberations.
This decision comes in the aftermath of a mediation meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the feuding factions, held at the Aso Villa in Abuja on Monday. The lawmakers, in a notice read on the house floor, cited their respect for the President as the primary reason for withdrawing the impeachment notice.
The conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had led to a schism among lawmakers, with 27 defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. The feud saw parallel sittings, an uncovered impeachment plot, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a series of resignations within Fubara’s cabinet of pro-Wike commissioners.
