Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed concern over the declining reading culture among Nigerian youths, attributing it to systemic issues. Obi emphasized the importance of improving the reading culture in Nigeria and encouraging educational development.

Speaking at the ‘Christmas Magic’ event in Lagos on Friday, dedicated to promoting reading among Nigerian youths, Obi highlighted the factors contributing to the diminishing reading culture. These factors include a poor educational system, materialistic desires, a lack of reading materials and functional libraries, and a diminishing passion for reading among the youth.

The event featured the unveiling of a new children’s book, “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf,” authored by renowned writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Notable figures such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo, academics like Prof. Hakeem Bello-Osagie, and activists like Dr. Oby Ezekwesili and Ndidi Nwuneli attended the event, collectively urging Nigerian youths to rekindle their passion for reading.

Obi, echoing a common sentiment at the event, emphasized the correlation between reading and leadership, stating, “Readers are leaders, they say. Reading will help the youth to build their critical thinking and analytical ability to succeed in an ever-complex world.” He commended Chimamanda for her efforts in using literary works to advocate for societal causes.

Expressing gratitude for the event, Obi reiterated his vision for Nigeria’s future. He affirmed that the New Nigeria he envisions would encourage gifted youths to discover their talents, fuel their passions, and develop their skills for societal progress.
