Ogun Woman Apprehended for Attempting to Drown Five-Month-Old Daughter

In a disturbing incident, the Ogun State Police Command revealed on Monday that they had arrested 30-year-old Olubunmi Ajayi on Sunday for allegedly trying to drown her five-month-old daughter, Imole Anifowose, in the RSS River, Sagamu.

According to a statement from SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, a passerby named Olusola Sonaya witnessed the incident and acted swiftly to rescue the baby from the water.

The baby was promptly taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, for necessary medical attention. As of the latest update, the infant is reported to be in stable condition.

The statement disclosed, “A five-month-old baby, Imole Anifowose, is now in stable condition after Olusola Sonaya, a resident of RSS River Sagamu, prevented a planned drowning by the mother.”

Describing the incident as an attempted murder, the statement further explained, “On the 21st of January 2024 at about 17:30hrs, Oluwabunmi Ajayi, aged 30 years, was sighted by a humanitarian dropping her little child into the river. The person who witnessed the act rushed to the river and rescued the baby from drowning.”

Currently, the mother is in custody and under observation to assess her mental health. Authorities are making efforts to contact relatives or the husband to ensure the baby’s welfare while in the hospital.
