Multichoice, the parent company of DStv, announced on Wednesday that the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament will not be broadcast on its SuperSport channels. The satellite television company failed to secure the broadcasting rights for the continent’s largest football event.

In a statement, Multichoice clarified, “SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th – February 11th, 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament. However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.”

The statement also emphasized Multichoice Africa’s commitment to ensuring that football fans across the continent continue to have unrivaled access to entertainment and football games on DStv and GOtv platforms. These platforms will continue to feature prestigious competitions such as the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League, and more.

The 34th edition of AFCON is set to begin on January 13 in Ivory Coast. Nigeria, three-time winners, will be in Group A alongside the hosts Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea. The Nigerian Eagles will kick off their campaign for a fourth continental title against Equatorial Guinea on January 14, followed by matches against Ivory Coast on January 18 and Guinea-Bissau on January 22.
