The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has cried out over the refusal of the Department of State Services (DSS) to allow his personal physician have access to him, while under its custody.
It could be recalled that Nnamdi Kanu is being held in solitary confinement by the DSS for over 14 months.
Speaking in a statement issued on Monday by his lead counsel, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor Esq, Kanu reiterated that the Federal Government, through the DSS has continued to flout a valid court order, which directed that he should have access to medical treatment.
“For the records, it is pertinent to reiterate that for the umpteenth time, the lawless DSS has continued to treat with greatest contempt/disdain, the existing Court Order, which specifically directed that Onyendu should be allowed access to his personal Medical Doctor for an independent review/investigation of his current health status.
“This is following the continued depletion of his potassium level” Ejiofor stated.
Kanu’s lawyer was full of regret that the court order is being “gravely flouted with impunity by the DSS, as efforts made by Onyendu’s personal doctor to see him at the DSS facility where Onyendu is currently being detained were rebuffed/rejected by the DSS”.
Ejiofor said, “Presently, Onyendu is experiencing gastro intestine disorder, which requires regular intake of antacid and other availing medical solutions, following persistent heartburn. “Unfortunately, the DSS has denied him the least of the prescribed pain killer tablet that could provide momentary relief”.
Nevertheless, Kanu’s lawyer drew the attention of the global community, warning that “should anything untoward happen to Onyendu, the DSS and the Federal Government of Nigeria should be held responsible”.
The IPOB lawyer insisted that “Orders of the Court must be obeyed, particularly where the Order has not been set aside.
“The DSS is a creation of the Law and must not be seen to be operating above the Laws of the Land that created it” Ejiofor posited.
Meanwhile, Ejiofor disclosed That following the development “our erudite Lead Counsel – Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN has immediately swung into action to ensure an immediate end to this maltreatment and impunity.
