The Federal Government kicked off the disbursement of N20,000 to vulnerable groups in Cross River on Monday as part of its ongoing efforts to combat poverty in the country. Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River, alongside the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, inaugurated the payment process in Calabar, expressing optimism about the positive impact it would have on poverty reduction.

Governor Otu lauded the initiative, recognizing its potential to alleviate poverty among vulnerable individuals. While appreciating the collaboration needed to achieve the government’s goal of lifting 50 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2030, Otu assured the President of the state’s readiness to support and collaborate with federal poverty reduction initiatives.

Highlighting the timely nature of the initiative, Governor Otu noted that some individuals had already begun receiving payment alerts, providing crucial financial assistance during the Christmas season. He conveyed confidence in a brighter future for both the country and the state, emphasizing plans to elevate Cross River as a model for other states.

Governor Otu underscored his administration’s commitment to inclusivity, assuring that the physically challenged would not face segregation. A dedicated commission has been established to address issues concerning them.

Minister Betta Edu emphasized President Tinubu’s determination to minimize poverty, highlighting the collaboration between the Federal Government and Cross River Government, as well as other state governors, to achieve this goal. She highlighted various federal initiatives, including Farmer Money, Trader Money, Conditional Cash Transfer, End Hunger Programme (scheduled for launch in January), and the Skill Acquisition Programme, all aimed at poverty reduction.

Mrs. Eyoanwan Otu, the Wife of the Governor, expressed gratitude for the initiative’s potential impact on countless lives in the state. She thanked President Tinubu, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, while urging beneficiaries to utilize the grant responsibly.
