Pope Francis has announced the creation of the Catholic Diocese of Aguleri and appointed Bishop Denis Isizoh as the maiden Bishop.
The Pope announced this on Sunday, February 12, 2023.
The new diocese of Aguleri was carved from the Archdiocese of Onitsha, making it suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Onitsha.
Before his appointment as the Chief Shepherd of Aguleri Diocese, Bishop Denis Isiuzo has been serving as the Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha and Titular Bishop of Legia.
Bishop Isiuzo was born in 1956 in Ogbunike in the Archdiocese of Onitsha. He had his philosophical studies at Bigard Memorial Seminary Ikot-Ekpene (now St. Joseph’s Seminary, Ikot-Ekpene) from 1976 to 1980. He equally studied Theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu from 1982 to 1985.
On September 28, 1985; he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Onitsha.
Then on May 1, 2015, he was consecrated the Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha Archdiocese.
