In a recent incident along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway near Katari, in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, reports indicate that a group of terrorists abducted 85 people, comprising both travelers and local residents. The abductions occurred between Thursday and Sunday, January 7, 2024, with more than four residents reportedly killed by the assailants.

The Kaduna State Police Command acknowledged a bandit attack on the expressway at Dogon Fili near Katari. Security forces engaged the terrorists in a fierce battle, forcing them to flee in different directions. Unfortunately, some travelers were caught in the crossfire and sustained gunshot injuries. The police identified individuals injured during the incident, including Jibrin Tasiu, Jummai Abubakar, Zafira Abubakar, AbdulKarim Nurudeen, Chinedu Jerry Moneke, and Ayo James. All injured parties were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention.

The police emphasized the incident’s isolated nature, asserting that the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway has been fortified for commuter safety. However, on-the-ground reports suggest that over 30 travelers were abducted, with an additional 55 individuals taken in neighboring communities.

The District Head of Bishini, Yohana Sarki, called for increased security presence in the area, stating that despite government efforts, attacks on villages persisted. A resident and village leader described the attackers as foreigners speaking the Fulani language. He recounted multiple incidents of bandit attacks, including the blockage of the highway and the abduction of travelers.

The Chief Imam of the Katari Central Mosque, Suleiman Mohammed, confirmed the Sunday attack and the abduction of approximately 30 travelers. He noted that, typically, bandits do not contact authorities for ransom after such incidents on the road, adding that individual homes are approached for negotiations when ransom demands are made.
