Lauretta Onochie, President Mohammadu Buhari’s aide on social media, has called on relevant authorities to go after people who are opposing the APC and its presidential candidate for religious reasons.
It is common knowledge that the decision of Bola Tinubu the presidential candidate of APC to pick a fellow Muslim, Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2023 elections has attracted criticism from various corners.
While religious groups such as the Christian Association of Nigeria and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria have kicked against the APC’s decision to fly a same-faith presidential ticket, some notable stalwarts of the party have resigned their membership in protest of the decision
Following this development, Onochie took to her Twitter account to share the Electoral Act 2022 On Religion which stipulates that any candidate, person, or association that engages in a campaign or broadcasting based on religious reasons for the purpose of opposing a political party or the election of a candidate commits an offense and can be subjected to a fine of 1 million naira or 12 years imprisonment.
She also called on the appropriate agency responsible for enforcing this law to do their job. Below is a screenshot of her tweet.
