Senate President Godswill Akpabio stirred up lighthearted banter in the Senate on Wednesday, suggesting that Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo might “retire” Senator Adams Oshiomhole if the governor returns to the Senate after his tenure.

The playful exchange occurred during a valedictory session in honour of Governor Okpebholo, who previously represented the Edo Central Senatorial District before becoming governor.

Akpabio, addressing Oshiomhole, stated, “Distinguished Senator Oshiomhole, before you stop, I thought he was from your senatorial district?”

Oshiomhole quickly clarified, “No, sir, he’s from Edo Central.”

Akpabio then quipped, “Okay, otherwise he may retire you when he comes back.”

Oshiomhole responded with a smile, “By the time he’s coming back, I might already be retired. If you add eight years to the current figure, I do not intend to do three terms here.”

Okpebholo emerged victorious in the September 21 Edo governorship election, defeating PDP’s Asue Ighodalo and Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata.
