Trigger-happy soldiers have killed an ad-hoc staff member of the Ogun State Government after shooting to disperse officials from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development who were enforcing compliance at Ganic company, Orile-Imo along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway in the Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of the state.
Oluwaseyi Adeoye, a member of the team assigned to enforce building regulations at Ganic company, was killed by the soldiers on Monday while his colleagues fled for fear of being mobbed to death.
Bellnews gathered that the enforcement team stormed Ganic Company to demolish a perimeter fence that violated approved building specifications.
However, the planning officials carrying out the operation were resisted by the heavily-armed soldiers who were protecting the private property.
The soldiers also had an altercation with policemen who accompanied the officials to carry out the enforcement.
“The soldiers should have exercised restraint. They even attacked the policemen who accompanied the officials during the operation. They shot sporadically, and would have killed everyone if others didn’t take to their heels,” a town planner who spoke on condition of anonymity told SaharaReporters.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tunji Odulami, said the military had been contacted to identify the personnel involved in the shootings.
“This should not have happened. We are working with all relevant security agencies to identify those responsible and ensure due process is followed,” Mr Odunlami said.
The deceased’s corpse has since been deposited at the State General Hospital morgue in Ijaye, Abeokuta.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Office, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the police had opened an investigation into the incident.
