On Thursday, members of the Orilowo Perishable Food Market Association staged a protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly, expressing dissatisfaction over the delay in approving the location of their market. Images from the protest, shared with PUNCH Metro, depicted association members holding placards with various inscriptions to voice their concerns.
The protesters called for immediate approval of the Orilowo Perishable Food Market to be situated at Plot 705 Adekunle Bus Stop, Ikorodu Road, Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area. The President of the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights, Alex Omotehinse, who led the protest, emphasized in a statement that the market should be granted approval to operate within a recognized market, adhering to established rules and standards.
According to Omotehinse, the association had submitted a letter dated May 16, 2022, to Agboyi-Ketu LCDA seeking approval for a designated site. However, the LCDA officials have allegedly refused to grant the approval, putting the business activities of the association at risk. The petition calls on the Lagos State House of Assembly to intervene, urging relevant agencies to approve the requested space for the Orilowo Perishable Food Market Association.
In response to the protesters, the Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams, reportedly addressed the association, requesting additional time. Adams was quoted by Vanguard as saying, “We appeal that you give us the opportunity; we would ensure justice; we would do the needful; but we need to hear from all parties involved, including the LCDA chairman. We cannot hear from only you and decide; we need to hear from all stakeholders.”
