Iran carried out the execution of five individuals on Monday who were convicted of multiple “armed robberies and banditry, which rendered roads unsafe and spread terror among people,” as reported by the judiciary’s Mizan Online website.

The convicts were involved in stealing livestock and building materials across various regions, including Alborz province west of Tehran. The announcement did not specify the date of their arrest, trial, and sentencing.

According to Mizan, Alborz province chief justice Hossein Fazeli-Harikandi confirmed the execution, stating, “The death sentence against the five convicts was carried out this morning.”

Iran has one of the highest rates of executions globally, surpassed only by China, according to human rights organizations like Amnesty International. The predominant method of execution in Iran is hanging.

In November, the Iran Human Rights group based in Norway reported that the Islamic republic executed over 700 people in 2023, marking the highest figure in eight years.

In a separate incident on Friday, Iran hanged four individuals convicted of spying for Israel, a move that occurred less than two weeks after authorities executed a man on similar charges.
