Plateau State witnessed a horrifying Christmas Eve as attacks on communities across three local government areas led to over 150 casualties and displaced more than 10,000 people. President Bola Tinubu condemned the attacks and ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators, emphasizing that justice would be served. The Chairman of Community Peace Observers in Bokkos Local Government Area reported the death toll, while sources revealed ongoing attacks in various villages.

Gunmen targeted Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, and other villages, burning houses and causing chaos. Community Peace Observers’ Chairman disclosed that in Bokkos town alone, over 10,000 people sought refuge in churches, mosques, schools, and private residences. The attacks have drawn condemnation from various quarters, including northern governors, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

State Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed grief over the gory Christmas, revealing that at least 15 people were buried in Mangun Local Government, and over 100 corpses were counted in Bokkos Local Government. Governor Mutfwang highlighted the displacement of 64 communities and the occupation of schools by terrorists, emphasizing the need for federal intervention.

Security lapses were acknowledged, prompting a call for an overhaul of the state’s security architecture. The Plateau State Police Command reported 96 confirmed deaths and 221 houses set ablaze. President Tinubu directed security agencies to arrest the culprits and mobilize relief resources for victims.

Northern governors, the Northern Senators Forum, and the Northern Elders Forum condemned the attacks, urging thorough investigations and a proactive approach to prevent future incidents. CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh mourned the victims and called for unity, peace, and intensified intelligence efforts.

The recent attacks highlight the challenging security situation in the region, prompting calls for urgent and comprehensive measures to address the root causes of conflicts and violence.
