The meeting between the Nigerian Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to discuss the removal of fuel subsidy has ended without reaching a consensus. Dele Alake, the spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, confirmed the meeting ended without an agreement.
However, Alake affirmed that talks will continue between both parties to arrive at a mutually beneficial solution.
This news came after the confirmation of the increase in petroleum pump prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
The NLC had rejected the new prices and demanded its withdrawal. This decision has sparked disappointment from Nigerians who believe the government should have put measures in place to ease the burden. The price increase has resulted in marketers accruing supplies and contributed to the formation of queues in petrol stations across the county.
Transporters have also tripled their fares, directly affecting Nigerians. Some people support the removal, believing the subsidy has been wasteful.
However, the Federal Government continues to engage in dialogues with the NLC to ensure a peaceful resolution.
