The Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of Olamilekan Odofin, a Yoruba Nation agitator who had evaded capture for more than a year. The State Police Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, conveyed this information through an official statement on X, revealing that the 34-year-old was apprehended by officers from the Ayobo Division.

Hundeyin clarified that the suspect, on January 9, 2023, masterminded assaults on motorists and law enforcement personnel, disguising the actions under the banner of Yoruba Nation agitation. He added that an ongoing investigation is being conducted following the arrest.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) stated, “After more than a year on the run, 34-year-old Olamilekan Odofin has been apprehended by officers of Ayobo Division. The suspect orchestrated attacks on motorists and the police under the guise of Yoruba Nation agitation on January 9, 2023. The investigation is currently underway.”

During a Yoruba nation protest last year in Ojota, Lagos, at least one individual lost their life, two policemen sustained injuries, and several vehicles were damaged. Both the pro-Yoruba separatist group and the police exchanged accusations regarding who initiated the clash.

The agitators contended that the police provoked the confrontation when attempting to disperse the rally, which the agitators refused to disband. Hundeyin, in a statement on X, dated January 9, 2023, responded to the incident, stating, “In the early hours of today, individuals posing as Yoruba Nation Agitators disrupted social and commercial activities in the Ojota area of the State.”

He continued, “A team of police officers promptly intervened to disperse the unlawful gathering and prevent a breakdown of law and order. The individuals attacked the police, resulting in shootings and the destruction of two vehicles. One person has been confirmed dead, while two police officers shot by the individuals are currently receiving treatment. Four suspects have been arrested, and investigations are underway.”

Hundeyin emphasized, “Normalcy has been restored to the area, and Lagosians are urged to go about their lawful businesses. The Lagos State Police Command is committed to preventing any person or group from disrupting the peace currently enjoyed in the State.”
