Vincent Enyeama, former Super Eagles captain, has dropped a cryptic message on Instagram suggesting that he may join the technical crew of the national team when the camp opens on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, according to The PUNCH.
Enyeama made the announcement on Monday in response to a post about the team’s preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on the official Instagram account of the Super Eagles. The team is set to begin a one-week training camp on Tuesday, lasting until January 9.
In his Instagram post, Enyeama wrote, “Let’s go, See you in camp. Time for business.” If he joins, Enyeama will be added to the list of former Super Eagles goalkeepers Alloy Agu and Ike Shorunmu, who were appointed as goalkeeper trainers for the national team.
This potential appointment comes two months after the 42-year-old goalkeeper spoke about being poorly treated by the Nigeria Football Federation, leading to his retirement from the team. Despite the past issues, Enyeama expressed a willingness to move forward and contribute to the national team.
Enyeama, Nigeria’s most successful goalkeeper, made his debut for the Eagles in May 2002 and earned 101 caps for the national team. He played a crucial role in winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. The retired goalkeeper participated in five Nations Cup tournaments and three World Cup tournaments with the national team. Enyeama retired from the Eagles in 2015 following a disagreement with former coach Sunday Oliseh.
As Nigeria aims for a fourth continental title, the team will face Equatorial Guinea on January 14 in their first Group A match, followed by clashes with Ivory Coast and Guinea Bissau. The Africa Cup of Nations will be Nigeria’s 20th participation in the tournament, with previous victories in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
