President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received former Ekiti State Governor, Segun Oni, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.
Bellnews reports that Oni was accompanied by Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, and Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, in what observers view as part of broader efforts by the Presidency to engage influential political figures across party lines.
While the Presidency did not release official details of the discussions, Punch noted that the meeting was held behind closed doors and centred on national issues and ongoing internal repositioning within the APC.
The visit is seen as significant, given Segun Oni’s past association with the PDP and Social Democratic Party (SDP), and may hint at strategic realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier in the day, President Tinubu also held a private session with APC governors under the umbrella of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) at the Presidential Banquet Hall, Aso Rock Villa.
The meeting, which commenced at 7:00 p.m., was led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, the PGF Chairman.
Among the early arrivals were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu and Governor Oyebanji of Ekiti, underscoring the strategic weight of the consultations.
The flurry of engagements comes just hours before the APC’s NEC meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 24, at the State House Conference Centre.
At the top of the agenda is the appointment of a substantive National Chairman to replace Abdullahi Ganduje, who recently stepped down due to health concerns.
It is expected that Tinubu will formally brief party leaders on his preferred direction regarding the leadership vacancy and other internal matters.
There is growing speculation that the NEC may opt to return the chairmanship to the North-Central zone, following complaints of marginalisation by some stakeholders from the region.
Thursday’s meeting is also expected to deliberate on the party’s financial status, ongoing restructuring efforts, and preliminary planning for the 2027 elections.
