President Tinubu has given the green light for the reopening of both land and air borders with Niger Republic, alongside the lifting of financial and economic sanctions against the Republic of Guinea.
The announcement came via the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, on Wednesday.
Ngelale’s statement clarified that this decision aligns with the resolutions reached by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during its extraordinary summit on February 24, 2024, in Abuja.
During the summit, ECOWAS leaders collectively decided to remove economic sanctions against Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
Furthermore, President Tinubu specifically instructed the immediate lifting of the following sanctions imposed on Niger:
- Reopening of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger Republic, alongside the revocation of the ECOWAS no-fly zone for all commercial flights to and from Niger Republic.
- Resumption of all commercial and financial transactions between Nigeria and Niger, including the restoration of utility services and electricity to Niger Republic.
- Unfreezing of assets belonging to the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks, as well as those of state enterprises and parastatals in commercial banks.
- Readmission of Niger into financial assistance and transactions with all financial institutions, notably EBID and BOAD.
- Lifting of travel bans on government officials and their relatives.
