THE DEDICATION OF OUR LADY OF ASSUMPTION NNEWI: LATE SENATOR IFEANYI UBA

Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu was named after a French mother and daughter who co-founded the Pontifical Society of the Holy Apostle Peter. This society made a significant contribution to the construction of the seminary’s main building. The naming was intended to honor their generosity and support of priestly formation in mission territories, particularly in Nigeria.

At the Seat of Wisdom Seminary in Owerri, the three student hostels were named after Cardinal Mayer, Wetter, and Tomko to recognize their contributions, during the construction and establishment of the seminary.

Remembering those who have helped us in times of need is an essential part of human culture. Even animals understand it. It is a central element of African and Christian culture. The history of the Church is rich in churches, schools, hospitals, and other institutions named after individuals who contributed to their establishment in one way or another. The aim is not only to honor generous individuals but also to encourage others to follow their example.

It was a grave oversight that the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral in Nnewi was dedicated without giving the late Senator Ifeanyi Uba the recognition he deserved. Simply mentioning his name in passing was insufficient. I watched the video in which the late senator recounted how he initiated the cathedral’s construction and the difficulties he had to overcome. I wept.

This is not a time for assigning blame, but for taking the right action. It may have been an oversight on the part of the organizers. If so, a serious one, but it can be rectified. A memorial commemorating his contribution to the cathedral’s construction can still be erected there.

Mr. James, who made this omission public, may not be a good practising Christian, as some claim, but his anger is justified. I did not see in his expression that of a man who wanted to leave the Church or fight against it, but simply that of a man pointing out an error—in a way that expressed his feelings.

We should honor our local benefactors as much as our foreign donors, whether living or deceased. May the soul of Senator Ifeanyi Uba rest in peace.
