Former Super Eagles midfielder, Sunday Mba, is optimistic about the national team’s success in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Mba, renowned for his pivotal role in the 2013 AFCON victory, shared his confidence in a recent radio interview, emphasizing the strong camaraderie within the Eagles Class of 2013 as a crucial factor in their success in South Africa.
In the interview, Mba, who scored the decisive goal in the 2013 AFCON final against Burkina Faso, expressed his belief that the current Super Eagles squad would make a successful start in their opening match against Equatorial Guinea. The draw ceremony placed Nigeria in Group A alongside Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and the host nation.
Backing the team to qualify from the group, Mba cautioned against underestimating opponents, noting the enhanced preparations of all participating teams. He asserted that Nigeria, with its talented strikers and a well-balanced team, is the team to watch in the 2023 AFCON.
While expressing his confidence in the Super Eagles, Mba also highlighted challenges faced by players based in Nigeria, such as inferiority complex and limited training camp duration, which can impact their ability to showcase their talents at major tournaments. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about the team’s overall performance in the upcoming AFCON competition.
