In response to recent attempts by separatist Yoruba Nation agitators to disrupt public order, governments and security agencies in South-West states have intensified security measures around government institutions.
The aim is to prevent any breakdown of law and order orchestrated by groups pushing their agendas onto the states.
The MOVE comes in the wake of an incident where Yoruba Nation agitators, dressed in army camouflage and armed with rifles, attempted to take over the Oyo State Government Secretariat.
Despite their efforts, security agencies thwarted the attempt and arrested 20 of the agitators.
This incident follows a previous takeover of Radio Nigeria, Amuludun FM 99.1 airwaves in Ibadan by Yoruba Nation agitators. The agitators advocate for the secession of the Yoruba people from Nigeria, citing perceived neglect and marginalization.
In response to these developments, South-West states like Osun, Ekiti, and Ogun have bolstered security measures to prevent similar incidents within their territories.
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, directed increased security around government structures to safeguard public peace.
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said, “In line with the governor’s directive, security men and women were deployed to identified locations yesterday to ensure the Oyo State incident is not repeated in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
“I associate with my brother, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde. I urge the agitators to sheath their swords. We must continue to try to realise the Nigeria of our dreams.
“We must support President Bola Tinubu as he drives the federal reform efforts. We have a duty to stand by Mr President in the realisation of this difficult national assignment.”
Similarly, Ekiti State assured residents of adequate security measures and emphasized the state’s commitment to maintaining law and order. Police authorities in these states echoed their readiness to prevent any acts of lawlessness, emphasizing the importance of public safety.
Meanwhile, pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organization, Afenifere, condemned the invasion of the Oyo State House of Assembly and urged a thorough investigation into the incident.
The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes also denounced the invasion, warning agitators to refrain from further acts of provocation in Ibadan and Oyo State.
