A tragic lone accident in Gombe metropolis has claimed the lives of six individuals, with 11 others sustaining various injuries. The incident, which occurred on Friday, involved a white DAF trailer used for commercial purposes with registration number GME 74 XT.
The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that the accident involved 17 individuals, all males. The injured victims, who suffered fractures, head injuries, and bruises, were promptly rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Gombe and the Federal Teaching Hospital for further medical attention.
The accident took place around 11:24 hrs, and the FRSC emergency response team was notified at 11:46 hrs, arriving at the scene for rescue operations by 11:54 hrs. The crash site was Jekadafari, behind the Specialist Hospital in Gombe Township.
The Gombe FRSC Sector Commander, Felix Theman, confirmed that the trailer, which was transporting 27 cows with some young men seated on top, lost control due to dangerous driving. The road, not designed for trailers and lorries, posed a challenge with its narrow width and numerous bends.
Theman expressed concern about the trend of young men dangerously driving heavy-duty vehicles and articulated lorries within Gombe metropolis. He emphasized the need for awareness sessions with stakeholders in the trailer driving business to promote cautious driving practices and prevent fatal accidents. The FRSC handed over the vehicle and other items to the MTD Police at the scene. The deceased were deposited at the Specialist Hospital Mortuary.
