Former Senator of Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani has taken to his official Twitter handle to react after the Minister o Finance, Zainab Ahmed revealed that the Government is planning to place a 5% excise duty on telecommunications across the country.
The 5% tax would reportedly affect calls and data. Subscribers who make a call at N20 per minute would now make calls at N40 per minute. Also, data would increase to N2,500 per gigabyte.
While addressing the tax proposal, Minister Zainab Ahmed stated that the Federal Government introduced the proposal to seek more funds from the non-oil sector to help the country maintain its dwindling economy.
However, the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami has kicked against the proposal, saying that it would be harmful to the sector and subscribers.
While reacting to this, former Senator Shehu Sani said, “They increased the tax on carbonated drinks and now targeting data and calls. They have activated the taxing mode after exhausting borrowing.”
