In a landmark decision, the Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of 11 Supreme Court justices nominated by President Bola Tinubu. The confirmation follows a thorough review and adoption of a report presented by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters during a plenary session.

President Tinubu had submitted the nominations to the Senate for approval based on recommendations from the National Judicial Council. The vacancies on the apex court bench arose due to the demise and retirement of some justices.

The confirmed nominees are as follows:

  1. Justice Haruna Tsammani (North East) – Former Chair of the Presidential Election Petition Court
  2. Justice Moore Adumein (South South)
  3. Justice Jummai Sankey (North Central)
  4. Justice Chidiebere Uwa (South East)
  5. Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme (South East)
  6. Justice Obande Ogbuinya (South-East)
  7. Justice Stephen Adah (North Central)
  8. Justice Habeeb Abiru (South West)
  9. Justice Jamilu Tukur (North West)
  10. Justice Abubakar Umar (North West)
  11. Justice Mohammed Idris (North Central)

With the confirmation of these 11 justices, the Supreme Court now fulfills the complete statutory requirement of having 21 justices on its bench. This development underscores the commitment to maintaining a full complement of justices to ensure the effective functioning of the highest court in the land.
