The upcoming 2025 governorship election in Anambra State is expected to take place in November of that year, with the incumbent governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, enjoying the right of first refusal.
Since 2006, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has held sway in the state, seeing all its governors secure smooth rides to a second term. However, with the departure of influential figures like Mr. Peter Obi and Senator Victor Umeh from APGA, the political landscape for the party appears uncertain in the upcoming election. The current national leadership of APGA, led by Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, may not exhibit the same formidable strength seen during Umeh and Chief Victor Oye’s eras.
Moreover, Soludo faces a challenging environment marked by anger, conflicts, excruciating poverty, and rancor, leading some critics to speculate that his tenure might mark the end of APGA’s dominance in the state.
Several potential candidates have emerged, both individuals and groups, gearing up to challenge Soludo in the 2025 poll:
- Peter Obi: The former governor aims to establish himself as a symbol of new democracy in Nigeria by supporting a Labour Party governor in Anambra. The 2025 election provides an opportunity for Obi to respond to Soludo’s earlier communication and address perceived infractions.
- Val Ozigbo: Hailing from Aguata clan like Soludo, Ozigbo poses a significant threat to the incumbent governor’s re-election. If he secures the Labour Party ticket, Ozigbo could divide loyalties in the Old Aguata Union area and Anambra South Senatorial District. He enjoys support from the Catholic Church, aggrieved traditional rulers, and the youth.
- Victor Umeh: The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Umeh, allegedly ousted from APGA in 2023, seeks to rectify the perceived injustice. Having won the LP Senatorial ticket in 2023, Umeh remains a formidable force with a history of sustaining APGA during his ten-year tenure as National Chairman.
- Tony Nwoye: Known as a one-man riot squad, Nwoye’s potential entry into the 2025 race brings a network of youth support that has proven influential in past contests. His past victories, including defeating prominent figures, showcase his strength as a formidable force.
- Uche Ekwunife: A prominent figure in Anambra politics, Ekwunife’s decision could sway significant support. If she chooses not to recognize Soludo as a brother from the Aguata clan, her opposition could attract a substantial following, especially among women.
- Obiora Okonkwo: A businessman with academic credentials, Okonkwo expresses dissatisfaction with Soludo’s performance and aims to give Anambra State a new direction. His focus on issues such as excessive taxes and insecurity resonates with some voters.
- Ifeanyi Ubah: Seen as a threat to Soludo’s re-election, Ubah’s association with the APC could further complicate the electoral landscape. The governor’s efforts to suppress support for Ubah within the traditional institution reflect the tension between the two.
Soludo’s administration faces challenges, including criticism for shop demolitions and alleged mistreatment of citizens and institutions. As the contenders prepare for the 2025 election, the question remains whether APGA can maintain its historical dominance in Anambra State.
