The Nigerian Police Force has filed fresh charges against human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore, a critic of the government, is expected to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

While the exact nature of the new charges remains unclear, a source familiar with the matter confirmed that court filings have been completed.

This development is the latest in Sowore’s protracted legal battle with the police, during which his passport has been seized by court order. In January 2025, he faced 17 counts of cybercrime offences over his repeated description of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun as “illegal.”

Those earlier charges stemmed from a video clip and several social media posts in which Sowore accused the police chief of occupying the office unlawfully, citing what he called an unconstitutional extension of Egbetokun’s tenure.

Sowore, was on Friday night released by the police after spending over 48 hours in detention at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
