The Ogun State government has taken decisive measures against building infractions, sealing nine structures for violations and issuing contravention notices to 46 residential buildings in two estates located in Sango-Ota.
During a two-day monitoring and enforcement exercise across various areas, including Sango-Ota, Itori, Ibese, Kobape, Ilisan Remo, Ilara Road, Iperu Remo, and Ogere, the government emphasized the importance of compliance with town planning laws and regulations. Acting General Manager of Ogun State Building Production Management Authority, Olakunle Olaniran, warned owners and developers of estates to adhere to the prescribed procedures, which include obtaining permits, authorization to commence construction, stage-to-stage certification of building constructions, and a certificate of fitness-to-use.
Olaniran revealed that the enforcement exercise was conducted in collaboration with the Central Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development. While acknowledging that developers of the estates had been previously invited to a meeting, the authority decided to proceed with enforcement due to inadequate responses.
He emphasized that the mere fencing of an estate does not guarantee compliance with the law, asserting that all buildings, whether within an estate or not, must have planning permits, building authorization, stage-to-stage certification, and a certificate of fitness-to-live. Olaniran concluded by stating that the sensitization efforts would be continuous to ensure continued compliance with town planning regulations.
