The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to rein in the state’s task force responsible for demolishing illegal structures and revenue collection, citing reports of undue hardship inflicted on residents.
In a communique issued after its February Congress and signed by Council Chairman Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu and Secretary Sir Aloysius Ofodile, the NUJ condemned the actions of the government task force, which it accuses of causing suffering and violence in the guise of enforcing demolition and revenue generation measures.
The statement criticized the task force for its overzealousness and urged the governor to intervene to halt or reduce the forceful actions of its members. The NUJ emphasized the need for civility and compassion in dealing with demolitions, especially considering the challenging economic circumstances faced by many citizens.
Furthermore, the NUJ advised the government to prioritize the security of residents amidst rising crime rates, both in Anambra State and nationwide.
While acknowledging the government’s efforts in road construction, the NUJ called for intensified actions to improve the deplorable condition of many roads across the state, urging prompt measures before the onset of the 2024 rainy season.
