The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly issued a nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government, setting a 14-day ultimatum.

This decision stems from the Federal Government’s failure to implement the 16-point agreement reached with organized labour, NLC, and TUC on October 2, 2023.

Expressing discontent with the government’s handling of the situation, NLC and TUC leaders have criticized the government’s apparent disregard for the hardships faced by the populace despite efforts to maintain industrial harmony.

The October 2 agreement aimed to address the adverse socioeconomic effects of the IMF/World Bank-induced increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the devaluation of the naira, which have severely impacted the masses and workers in Nigeria.

In a statement, organized labour lamented the necessity of resorting to such measures but emphasized the persistent neglect of citizens’ welfare and the resulting hardships, leaving them with no alternative.

Effective February 9, NLC and TUC have outlined a series of actions to be taken if the government fails to meet its obligations under the agreement within 14 days from February 9, 2024.
