The Osogbo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has made an appeal to the striking members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in Osun State, urging them to bring an end to their month-long strike. The strike, which began on November 22, was initiated after an incident where policemen prevented JUSUN members from physically confronting the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Adepele Ojo, over allegations of abuse of office and denial of allowances.
Yemi Abiona, the Chairman of Osogbo NBA, expressed concern about the adverse impact of the strike on lawyers and the legal system. Abiona emphasized that the closure of the courts was affecting lawyers, especially in terms of their livelihood. He pointed out that the strike was causing delays in the legal process, leading to the continued detention of awaiting trial inmates who could have regained freedom.
Abiona stated, “The strike embarked upon by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, Osun State branch is going to a month now and it has continued to have negative impacts on the lives of lawyers in particular.” He highlighted that the primary workspace for lawyers is the court premises, and with the ongoing strike, lawyers are unable to access the courts, affecting their means of livelihood.
The NBA chairman urged JUSUN members to reconsider their stance and create room for negotiations after resumption of activities. He emphasized the widespread negative effects of the strike not only on lawyers but also on individuals, such as those awaiting trial, whose cases have been put on hold since the commencement of the strike. The appeal underscores the desire for a swift resolution to the issues leading to the industrial action and the resumption of normal court activities in Osun State.
