The Anambra State Government has taken well-known native doctor, Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, to court.
He appeared before the State High Court in Awka allegedly over charges including kidnapping and other criminal offenses.
This legal move comes after the state introduced a new law to regulate traditional medicine practices. The law, The Anambra State Indigenous Traditional Medicine Practices Regulatory Agency and Other Related Matters, aims to monitor and control the activities of native doctors and herbal practitioners in the state.
Back in February, Akwa Okuko was arrested as part of an investigation into claims that he performed money rituals for clients.
A video that went viral at the time showed the native doctor denying those allegations. In the video, he said he never carried out the ritual known as “Okeite,” which is believed to involve extreme and illegal practices. He also claimed he was following the new law put in place by the state government that bans such acts.
